Mentors, Guides and Referees:

These are the mentors, guides, and referees who have inspired, motivated, challenged and ultimately supported my curiosity and my academic (and not so academic) analysis of the world around me.  They have also been friends and sometimes even champions. 

The last, Dr. Stephen Straker, was a truly remarkable man.  I had thought to share the news of my return to school with him when I learned of his death.  It came as a shock, as he was young by today's standards.  He was bright, gentle, funny, perceptive and so very caring.  I cannot say the world is a poorer place for his absence because he has left an indelible and positive imprint on so many hearts and minds.  I am saddened by his departure, but hold dear the privilege of having known him for a time.
